When installing Linux I always create a separate partition for my home folder. The main reason for this is that a reinstall of the operating system does not necessarily have to affect my home folder. On Linux this is a very simple task done during the installation process, but Os X does not offer the ability to do this during the install. Never the less it is still a simple task.
I am not going into detail about how to partition a disk under Os X. Use Disk Utility and set the partition size as you like. I like to have a smaller system partition. Just large enough for the operating system and any applications I may need to install. The second partition usually gets what ever space is left of the drive. More than enough to take care of all my documents, pictures, movies and music library. For the rest of this guide I will reference the default (system) partition as HD1 and the second partition, which is gonna be the new location for the home folder, as HD2.
OK, so the install is done, we have our two partitions and the home folder is in it’s default location,
on HD1. Now open the finder and navigate to the /Users directory. Click on your home folder, and then drag the entire folder to the root of HD2. You may need to enter your password when doing this. if prompted enter it. Now you have two folders with your username on them. One in /Users/username on HD1, with the icon of a house (which tells you this is your current home folder), and one under HD2/username, with an ordinary folder icon. We’re almost there. Now we just have to tell Os X to use the folder on HD2. Open System Preference, click on Accounts, and click to open the padlock in the lower left hand corner. After entering your password and the padlock snaps open right (or ctrl) click on your username in the users list, and choose Advanced Options. In the advanced options window there is a line that says Home Directory with the path to your current home folder. Click on the Choose button next to it, and browse to the folder you just copied to HD2 and click Open. Now the Home Directory line should say something like
. Click on the Ok button to close the Advanced Options. Close the padlock and quit System Preferences. Reboot the system.
When you log back in after the reboot you will see that the folder on HD2 now has the icon of a house. The home folder is moved.
If you’d like you can now delete the old home folder on HD1, but that is entirely up to you.
